Better, perhaps, to think in terms of a quote attributed to Noam Chomsky:

"I'm not saying you are self-censoring ... But what I'm saying is, if you believed something different you wouldn't be sitting where you're sitting."

This quote can be applied to Hitchens, because, while he frequently discloses facts & makes arguments that run directly counter to the 'accepted' establishment line, he never quite follows his lines of reasoning through to their logical ultimate conclusions.

And if Hitchens did that, then yes, he would be dangerous to the establishment. But he doesn't. So the Mail on Sunday is happy to 'license' him.

In his heart of heats, I suspect Hitchens needs to maintain a few fundamental illusions, simply in order to stay 'sane' (and in doing this he is no different from most people in the world).

So, not 'controlled' opposition, but 'licensed' (in my opinion) on account of his intellectual limitation which renders him reliably unwilling/unable to discern the bigger picture.
