The FBI investigated President Carter's two closest White House aides, Chief of Staff Hamilton Jordan and Press Secretary Jody Powell.
Jordan had reportedly snorted cocaine during a visit to New York City's Studio 54, a disco club loved by Donald Trump and his friend Roy Cohn.
Powell had reportedly been with Jordan at Studio 54.
The source for the FBI was 'less than objective.'
Two owners of Studio 54, Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, were in trouble with the law over tax evasion and other charges.
Schrager had been arrested for possession of cocaine.
Rubell's chief lawyer was Donald Trump's friend Roy M. Cohn.
According to Cohn's account, Rubell told him that Jordan asked for some cocaine.
