I remember when I was about 25 when this professional opera singer moved into the flat upstairs. She warned everyone that before a performance she would practice at home but only for a little while and at times when nobody was around. Anyway, I never heard her sing for months and then one day I was off for a week and this most amazing sound came from upstairs. It was a converted house so the sound proofing wasn't great. Well, I was into rock and was a bit snooty about opera which I don't normally like, but her amazing voice and the purity of the notes hovering in mid air spellbound me. So I opened the front door and crept up the stairs and sat on the last step near her front door and listened. Wow! Such beauty! The voice as a perfect musical instrument. I wondered how many people had that privilege to hear a professional opera singer up so close? When she had finished I knocked on her door and told her how lovely it was to hear her sing. She was very relieved that she hadn't been a nuisance.
