Much of the narrative in this case resembles heavy ‘spin’ (and possibly even downright embellishment or re-writing of history) designed to PROTECT PHILLIP SCHOFIELD from potential questions, suspicions and criticism concerning his *arguable* failure to blow the whistle on his brother earlier, or to take earlier more forceful steps to halt his brother’s alleged offending.
Whether Phillip Schofield could have done more than he did, or acted sooner, I have no idea. Certainly, PS’s conduct from the narrative relayed by the media sounds exemplary and beyond reproach.
But why does one have the sense that PS, and/or his legal team, and/or the media reporting the courtroom exchanges, are ‘over egging the pudding’ in their efforts to make PS look responsible and blameless?
Yes, Phillip Schofield is presumably a very valuable commodity for ITV (as well as the tabloids who fill column inches from stories generated by This Morning). But is there something else going on?
One suspects that the narrative around what happened between Phillip Schofield and his brother is being crafted with a mind to deflecting and distracting from concerns some have that PS may not always have behaved in an exemplary fashion when interacting with minors.
And questions around PS’s alleged historical interactions with the late Jimmy Savile.

This would be pretty funny if it weren’t so terrifying.
Apparently the local French prosecutor referred the woman to police, and French police arrested her, on the basis of a “law of July 29, 1881 on the freedom of the press” updated in 2021, which specifically forbids-
“Public insult to the President of the Republic by word, written image or means of communication by electronic voice.”
Good grief.
It really beggars belief that in 2023 such a law is on the statute books of France, a supposedly free country.
Clearly, referring to *any* human being as “garbage” or the like is not nice, is bound to cause offence (not least to the intended target), and probably contributes to coarsening public life and eroding good manners.
Hurling insults in public is neither to be celebrated nor encouraged.
NEVERTHELESS! Colorful insults directed at an individual ***that aren’t directed at any protected characteristic (such as actual or perceived race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, national origin, sex, gender, sexual orientation, economic status or disability)*** can neither be considered hate speech, nor unduly dangerous or harmful.
An insult like “garbage” is clearly not meant to be taken literally, for heaven’s sake!
The arrested woman very obviously was using the term “garbage” metaphorically to suggest that Emmanuel Macron behaves inhumanely and dictatorially (an opinion which millions — perhaps the majority of French — would appear to agree with).
France, where freedom of expression goes to die. What an appalling, stupid, illiberal piece of legislation. Yet it would seem to be an appropriate fit for the kind of trampled-upon society that Macron apparently is set upon creating…
