Around 75 million more people in India fell into poverty last year because of the pandemic-induced economic recession, compared with what it would have been without the outbreak, an analysis by Pew Research Center showed on Thursday.

Over one million additional patients who should have been diagnosed and treated have been missed as a result of the lack of access to health facilities in lockdowns, the Stop TB Partnership said.
A total of 1.4 million people died from TB in 2019.
In some of the worst-hit countries, the number of people diagnosed fell by up to 41 per cent on the previous year, setting the fight against the disease back by at least 12 years.
Dr Lucica Ditiu, executive director of the UN-hosted Stop TB Partnership, told The Telegraph: “Basically, we are back to square one. We have an additional one million people who are missing, which means more people who are secretly suffering.”
