Should we boycott Israel?

"In the UK, the Queen's speech  announced a new law essentially criminalising the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

"Under threat of prosecution, public bodies like universities and local councils will be prohibited from 'imposing their own direct or indirect boycotts, disinvestment or sanctions campaigns against foreign countries.'"

"The proposed law signals Boris Johnson hitching his foreign policy to America's, which under Trump is increasingly hostile to BDS."

UK’s Lord Polak says new Tory government is opportunity for pro-Israel lobbyists

"A veteran pro-Israel lobbyist in Westminster believes the recently-elected Conservative government represents an important opportunity to advance Israel’s interests amongst British decision-makers."

"During the speech, Polak also praised the government’s proposed legislation attacking the right to boycott companies complicit in Israeli human rights abuses.

“The promise by the government to legislate against BDS [Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions] was a first and shows where the new government is at in relation to these sorts of issues,” he told JNS."

Stuart Polak, Baron Polak,_Baron_Polak

"Polak was a youth officer at the Edgware United Synagogue in Edgware, northwest London.[2] He served as an officer of the Board of Deputies of British Jews in the 1980s.[2]

Polak joined the Conservative Friends of Israel in 1989.[2] He served as its Director for twenty-six years, until August 2015;[2] he now serves as its honorary president.[2] He also serves as chairman of TWC Associates and as a senior consultant to Jardine Lloyd Thompson.[3]

Polak was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for political service in the 2015 New Year Honours.[4] He was created a life peer taking the title Baron Polak, of Hertsmere in the County of Hertfordshire on 2 October 2015.[5]"

Resignation of Priti Patel

On 3 November 2017, the BBC's Diplomatic correspondent James Landale reported that Polak had accompanied Priti Patel, the Secretary of State for International Development when she had held a series of meetings in Israel in August 2017 without telling the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. They met Yair Lapid, the leader of Israel's centrist Yesh Atid party, and visited several organisations where official departmental business was discussed. Those meetings, and others later, led to Patel's resignation from the Cabinet on 8 November 2017.[6]

BBC journalist deletes tweet about UK’s ‘corrupt’ relationship with Israel

"tweeted Kuenssberg, “Senior Tory says Lord Polak should be chucked out of the party, claiming ‘the entire apparatus has turned a blind eye to a corrupt relationship that allows a country to buy access’.”"
