On 24 June 2019, prosecutors in California alleged in a court filing that Rep. Duncan Hunter used campaign funds to pay for five extramarital affairs with lobbyists and congressional staffers.

In 2018, Hunter pleaded not guilty on counts of wire fraud, falsifying records and campaign finance violations.

Hunter's wife, Margaret, who also faced federal charges, pleaded guilty in June 2019, and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors.
