The KGB's Major Anatoli Golitsyn, born in the Ukraine, defected to the USA in 1961.
Golitsyn claimed that Kim Philby, Donald Maclean and Guy Burgess were members of a Ring of Five enemy agents based in Britain.
Golitsyn was unable to identify some agents like Philby specifically by name, but Golitsyn provided sufficient information that MI6 was able to determine the culprits, and let them escape.[4]
Others have noted that Lord Victor Rothschild was said to be the key boss of the Ring of Five.
Golitsyn was interviewed by James Angleton, who is suspected of working for the Kosher Nostra.
Golitsyn claimed that "David", of the Ring of Five, was probably Lord Victor Rothschild, but MI5 rejected the suggestion.
Richard Helms (CIA) and J. Edgar Hoover (FBI) refused to believe Golitsyn.
In 1984 Golitsyn published a book about Soviet foreign policy called New Lies For Old. This was followed by The Perestroika Deception.
The official historian for MI5, Christopher Andrew,[7] described Golitsyn as an "unreliable conspiracy theorist".[8]
Andrew believes that although intelligence data provided by Golitsyn were reliable, some of his global political assessments of the Soviet and KGB strategy are questionable.[2]
In particular, he disputed the Golitsyn claim that the "Sino-Soviet split was a charade to deceive the West".[2]
Russia has never been truly communist.
