IRISH CONCENTRATION CAMP

Between 1925 and 1961, 796 children died at home for unmarried mothers in Tuam, in Galway, in Ireland.

The children are buried in a mass grave.



A worker at the home, Julia Devaney, confirmed the existence of the mass grave.

Julia Devaney entered St Mary’s Mother and Baby Home when she was nine years old.

She spent 36 years there until it closed in 1961.

She worked as a domestic servant for the Bon Secours nuns.

According to the Irish Mail on Sunday, Julia Devaney said that children would 'die like flies' in the home.

Some children died as a result of malnutrition and neglect.

Some died of measles, convulsions, TB, gastroenteritis and pneumonia.

The home, which was run by the Bon Secours nuns, was funded by Galway County Council.



Julia Devaney said: 

"There were never any toys or books, never any effort to teach them anything. I’m sure a lot of them are in mental homes now…’

"Nobody loved the children…’

"The children would be trying to get up on your knees and trying to love you, looking for affection."

The children were "emaciated, pot-bellied, fragile with flesh hanging loosely on their limbs."

This was the home run by the Bon Secours sisters, in Galway in Ireland.

Recently, the bodies of up to 800 children have been found in a septic tank near the home.

Around two children died each week at the institution. 

There were 10 similar children's homes across Ireland.

Some of the children from the Irish homes were adopted.

In England, almost 5,000 children - including babies - have disappeared from local government care homes in the past two years.

Some of those who disappeared were between four and nine years old.

The number includes a one-year-old girl missing since July 2013.

The second highest number was in Nottinghamshire where 215 children disappeared.

In Hertfordshire there were 209 missing children.

Historian Michael Dwyer has found that 2,051 children from Catholic children's care homes were part of secret vaccine trials in Ireland.

Similar trials are believed to have been carried out in St Patrick's Mother and Baby Home, St Peter's Mother and Baby Home, St Clare's Baby Home, the Good Shepherd Mother and Baby Home, St Joseph’s Industrial School for Boys, St Finbarr’s Industrial School for Girls, St Vincent’s Industrial School, St Joseph’s School for Deaf Boys, and St Saviours’s Dominican Orphanage.

A commission of investigation into the vaccine trials was halted by the Irish Supreme Court in 2003.
