The late Barbara Ehrenreich (1941-2022), sometimes along with her husband John (born 1943), wrote influential books describing the struggles of the working poor, and a middle class that was increasingly pressed downwards.

In their 1977 book 'The Professional Managerial Class' (PMCs for short) - this couple coined a term describing the key large group of society, which overall tends to help the ultra-wealthy and elites against the working poor and much of the middle class, whilst pretending to be 'technocrats' working for public good.

These 'PMCs' managing society are most of these faces you see in public telling us what to do - the politicians, the major media, the tech companies, the think tanks, the experts and university professors. And along with these public faces, an army of well-paid 'administrators' in charge of all of the systems of modern life.

This is the top 5%-10% of society, doing the more detailed day-to-day ruling over all of us ... pretending to care about us, whilst often in fact demeaning us and undermining us.

According to University of California Professor Catherine Liu (born 1964), this problem of the PMCs has only grown and expanded. It is poisoning most politics and government, and especially what used to be 'the Left', much to the regret of more old-fashioned 'leftists' like herself.

In her 2021 book, 'Virtue Hoarders: The Case Against the Professional Managerial Class', Liu details how the elites pretend to be concerned for the public ... as they serve the elites. The PMCs are always claiming to be so 'clearly' virtuous in their pro-elite agendas ... whilst they slander common people who have criticisms, as deplorable backward conspiracy thinkers or whatever.

PMCs are a strange kind of 'class' that mostly does not even really admit it is a 'class' ... which again is part of the problem. PMCs range across the left-right spectrum of mainstream politics so thoroughly that it is hard to escape them ... but the increasing instinct of common people, is increasingly to feel that these PMC 'experts' as well as the elites, are not really on our side.
