'Never' is an awfully long time. It might have been more temperate to state: 'I do not believe that it is in Scotland's interest, in my lifetime, to become an independent sovereign state'. Then he could have argued on that basis, citing economic-, political and global realities. He would also have been expressing an opinion, not imposing a dogmatic religion.
Tho now there is the question, What has the Irish Republic got after its century of being independent? - Many Irish say it doesn't seem to be 'Ireland' anymore. The question of 'independence' when your country yet follows the globalist agenda, may be moot.
