EDWARD LANSDALE - UGLY AMERICAN
Edward Lansdale, centre, Saigon, 1965
The CIA officer Edward Lansdale was a pioneer of psy-ops.
General Lansdale is said to be the model for Eugene Burdick and William Lederer's The Ugly American.
Edward Lansdale has been linked to the 'asuang' (vampire) psy-op, in the Philippines.
The 'asuang' was used against the 'Huks'.
"An army psychological warfare squad would spread stories that an 'asuang' (vampire) was loose in the hills.
"The psywar squad would set up an ambush, quietly grabbing and killing the last man in the patrol, puncturing his neck with two holes, and draining the corpse of blood before returning it to the trail.
"The 'asuang' ruse is part of the legend of Edward Lansdale, the US Air Force officer and intelligence operative who played a central role in counterinsurgency operations in the Philippines, and later during two tours in Vietnam."

Huks
Who were the Huks?
The Huks were peasants from Central Luzon in the Philippines.
Lansdale wanted Ramon Magsaysay to become president of the Philippines.
Lansdale created the idea of the "HUKS" as 'the enemy'.
He presented Magsaysay as being the "Huk Killer."
"One-half of Magsaysay's battalion, dressed as Huks, would 'attack' a village at night.
They'd burn some shacks.
In the morning the other half, in uniform, would attack and capture and 'kill some Huks'.

In the Philippines, Lansdale "joined torture sessions ... as an observer and participant".
One of those tortured was Major Kojima Kashii who knew where bullion and other treasure were hidden.

In the closing months of World War II, in the Philippines, several of Japan's highest ranking imperial princes hid tons of looted gold bullion and other stolen treasure in caves and tunnels
Lansdale recovered the loot.
Ray Cline argues that between 1945 and 1947 the gold bullion recovered by Lansdale was moved by ship to 176 accounts at banks in 42 countries.
Robert Anderson and CIA agent Paul Helliwell set up these black gold accounts "providing money for political action funds throughout the noncommunist world."
Edward Lansdale in 1963
According to Sterling Seagrave Lansdale "was on secret missions with a hand-picked team of Filipino assassins, assassinating leftists, liberals and progressives."
L. Fletcher Prouty alleged that Lansdale can be seen in one of the "three tramps" photographs that were taken near the Texas School Book Depository shortly after the assassination of United States President John F. Kennedy.[9]
Lansdale is said to have been the CIA officer linked to John F Kennedy's assassination in Oliver Stone's film JFK (1991).

"Lansdale was the father of modern counterinsurgency doctrine as practised by the British in Northern Ireland, and in Israel in the occupied Palestinian territories."
...Edward Lansdale, as head of the anti-Castro Operation Mongoose, wrote: "Gangster elements might prove the best recruitment potential for actions [murders] against police G-2 (intelligence) officials.
"CW [Chemical Warfare] agents should be fully considered."
The gangsters in Lansdale's employ were - Carlos Marcello, Santos Trafficante, Meyer Lansky, and Lucky Luciano.
