Yes indeed, cats & dogs do have souls, amongst other creatures ... the animals are our equals & often our betters
There is a touching episode of the original 'Twilight Zone' television series on this same theme, 'The Hunt' from 1962
--
Text of the classic beloved story of 'Rainbow Bridge', composed sometime in the late 20th century, the author anonymous:
The Animals You Love, & How You Will One Day See Them Again, at Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies who has been especially close to someone in this world, that animal companion, our 'pet', goes to the lush green expanse just next to Rainbow Bridge.
There by Rainbow Bridge, are meadows & hills for all of our special friends, lovely unfenced areas so they can run & play together as they please. There is plenty of food, water & sunshine, & our friends are warm & comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill or aged, are restored to health & vigour as if in their prime; those who were hurt or maimed, are made whole & strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams, our dreams of days & times gone by or of how things might have been.
The animals are almost completely happy & content, except for one thing; they each miss someone very special to them, someone who had to be left behind in what we humans think of as the world.
Every now & then, as the animals all run & play together, the day comes when one of them suddenly stops, a nose sensing something very special in the air ... the animal looks into the distance, bright eyes intent, body eagerly quivering.
Suddenly, the animal we loved in life, begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, legs carrying her or him faster & faster.
YOU have been sensed & spotted ... In a few seconds, you & your special friend finally meet once again, in the flesh but in the world beyond this one ... you cling together in a joyous reunion, & you know now, that you will never be parted again.
Happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head of your once-departed animal companion ... you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.
Then you, you & your special animal friend, cross Rainbow Bridge, & you both enter into heaven together ....
Every sentient being has a soul.
Animals have souls, and they know they "go to heaven" when they die.
One is reminded of Joshu's response on being asked whether a dog has a buddha-nature.
(One posted it, but mods didn't like it or weren't familiar with it).
Of course they do...
Soul means consciousness,
and consciousness, the feeling that "i am" is a symptom of the soul.
"Know that which pervades the entire body is indestructible. No one is able to destroy the imperishable soul."
PURPORT by HDG Swami Prabhupada :
This verse more clearly explains the real nature of the soul, which is spread all over the body.
Anyone can understand what is spread all over the body: it is consciousness.
Everyone is conscious of the pains and pleasures of the body in part or as a whole.
This spreading of consciousness is limited within one's own body. The pains and pleasures of one body are unknown to another.
Therefore, each and every body is the embodiment of an individual soul, and the symptom of the soul's presence is perceived as individual consciousness."
( Bhagavad Gita as it is, chapter 2 text 17 )
