Temperatures

'The UK Metereological Office has just reported that we have enjoyed the hottest May on record.

Meanwhile, those of us who have lived in the UK during May have endured unseasonal cold and rain, and have complained to one another constantly about it.

Welcome to the age of abstraction, when lived experience is irrelevant and theoretical constructions carry the day – when what is deemed right and true is unmoored from what is actually happening here and now....'

It all comes down to definitions. 'Temperature' is defined as the average of the hottest and coldest temperature within a 24hr period, even if that is not what it would be if 60*24 readings were taken daily and averaged out. What we experience is closer to what the latter average would be. After all, a maximum of 16C and a minimum of 12C = 14C average, the same as a 22C max and a 6C min. Two days like that have zero similarity - one is cloudy with westerly winds; the second is a high pressure with clear skies.
