Van der Zyl is a long-standing member of West London Synagogue, which held a Thanksgiving service for the late Lord Leon Brittan.

The West London Synagogue was founded by, among others, the great great grandfather of Esther Rantzen, Montague Leverson.

Esther Rantzen is herself a member.

Previous members have included the now-deceased Westminster City Councillors, Alan Bradley and Sir Simon Milton, both named by Scallywag magazine.

The former senior rabbi at West London Synagogue, Julia Neuberger, is the sister of Lord David Neuberger, who advocated censorship of social media to suppress references to VIP pedophiles.

In 2020, current West London Synagogue senior rabbi David Mitchell was suspended after joking and laughing about seeing kids' genitalia — his husband Ian Kirsh appears to be employed by John Caudwell of Caudwell Children.
