Zelensky illegitimate after his term ends 20 May?
Elections in Ukraine are cancelled ... legal scholars and political figures in Ukraine, debate whether Zelensky can legitimately remain President after his five year term expires on May 20
It is legally a grey area, and the controversy may be a vehicle for the Western powers to replace Zelensky in May
Under Ukraine's 'law on martial law', Zelensky can remain President ... but others say this law is against Ukraine's Constitution
Ukraine's Constitution says that if there is no President, the Speaker of Ukraine's Parliament, the 'Verkhovna Rada', takes over presidential powers until a new President is chosen
The Constitution says that Ukraine's Parliament or 'Verkhovna Rada' continues in case of war or national emergency, but does not speak of the President in this way
The Zelensky side says that the Constitution talks of a President ending office by death, resignation, impeachment or ill health ... but not because of 'end of term' ... and explicitly talks of the President continuing in office until a new President is inaugurated
But others say, this cannot mean the President stays in office endlessly as long as he gives an 'emergency' pretext for cancelling elections
