The picturesque Scots town once known as the country's food capitalThere is a caravan park and kids’ playground by the loch and at the far end of the loch is National Trust for Scotland’s Threave Garden, House and Estate open to visitors all year.
The town is said to be like stepping back in time for all the right reasons as it has a thriving High Street and a huge amount of local food businesses
On an island in the River Dee stands 14th century Threave Castle, the great fortress of the Douglases, which can be reached by ferry. Nearby is Threave Wildfowl Reserve, an important place for wintering wildfowl, where visitors can watch the birds from hides.

Probably not big enough for the big supermarkets to consider it 'profitable', which leaves the town free for SME businesses to supply local needs effectively. There's a case for saying that towns of 2,000 - 5,000 are what is needed to revive the UK SME engine, as the more of them that there are, the more money is retained in local economies and the less that is drained down to the big financial centres.
