Utah district bans Bible in elementary and middle schools 'due to vulgarity & violence'

“At Davis School District, located north of Salt Lake City, the collection of Christian scripture has been shelved for students until they enter high school.

“The district has removed the Bible from their elementary and middle school libraries after receiving a petition to ban the holy book due to its descriptions of sex and violence …

“On Dec. 11, the David School District received the petition from a parent to have the Bible removed from schools for being what the parent considered a ‘sex-ridden’ book …

“In the petition, the anonymous parent seems to mock Utah Parents United, a conservative parents coalition that sought to remove inappropriately sexual books from school libraries

“‘Utah Parents United left off one of the most sex-ridden books around: The Bible. You’ll no doubt find that the Bible has “no serious values for minors” because it’s pornographic by our new definition,’ the petition read …

“‘Get this PORN out of our schools,’ the parent wrote along with an eight-page listing of ‘offensive’ Bible passages.

“The school district itself did not explain its reasoning for banning the Bible, nor did it cite which verses were the deciding factor in its removal.

“Davis School District boasts over 72,000 students across all grade levels.”

Maybe folks should look at the Koran and the Talmud as well?

Indeed all the Abrahamic holy books have very troubling passages ... It is much easier in the Asian reincarnation faiths, because there are no 'binding' holy books. Even the most loved texts of all - such as the gentle Bhagavad-Gita from Hinduism - are not 'binding' versus your own experience of the divine. There isn't the 'one way is the only way' dictate.

Hong Kong also had a serious consideration of restrictions on the Bible, suggesting that it be classified as 'indecent' and be sold only with a warning wrapper and a restriction for 18 and over.

The Hong Kong complaint considered Bible content such as
A woman nails a man’s head to the ground with a tent peg while he sleeps
A father turns his daughter over to a mob who rapes her and kills her
The body of a woman cut up by her family into pieces
Scenes of:
Mass murder, genocide of women and children 'ordered by God'
Killing members of other religions and nonbelievers
Rape, slavery and human sacrifice

There is a scene in the 1971 film 'Clockwork Orange', where the violence-loving main character 'Alex' played by young Malcolm McDowell, is sent to prison ... finding there that he can pass the time cheerfully, after discovering that the prison library Bible has many tales of 'ultra-violence'.

Psalm 137 - beginning with the 'By the Rivers of Babylon' line like in the famous reggae song - ends in verse 9 with a shocking expression of joy in smashing the infant babies of enemies against the rocks. From Bible Gateway:
King James:
'Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.'
A modern version:
'Happy is the one who seizes your infants, and dashes them against the rocks.'

The Bible talks of burning alive misbehaving women, which led to the killing of many tens of thousands of women in early modern Europe as 'witches' and so on, once the Bible started being read
Genesis 38:24
'Judah said, 'Bring her out and let her be burned!'
Leviticus 21:9
'If she profanes herself by harlotry ... she shall be burned with fire.'

Impaling like the historical Count Vlad Dracula
Numbers 25:4
'Yahweh said ... Impale them facing the sun, for Yahweh'

Matthew 15:
'A Canaanite woman ... came to him crying out ... 'Have mercy on me ...'
Jesus answered, 'I was sent only to the house of Israel ... It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to the dogs'.

Bhagavad-Gita in 10 minutes
Tho the story is set amidst battle and war ... its 700 lines are without the cruelty of Bible or Abrahamic books
