Melvyn Bragg shared a bed with his late mother. He has said: “She was very slim, very lovely …” “When my dad was in the war, we slept in the same bed.” “I miss her terribly … I will always be close to her”.
When he was a boy of 12 or 13, Bragg says that he has a mental breakdown which lasted a year and a half. “I’ve no idea why it happened”.
According to Bragg, he then had a second mental breakdown in his 30s after his first wife took her own life. Bragg’s second marriage ended in divorce. Bragg is now on his third marriage.
BROTHELS, CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE, EDWINA CURRIE, RICHARD BRANSON
In 1996, Bragg wrote an article for a national newspaper insisting that legalising brothels would be safer for children and better for society.
He wrote: “Why are we so frightened of legalising brothels? … In countries that tolerate brothels, the incidence of sexual abuse and the sexual abuse of children is lower than it is here.” He added that “at the time of high Victorian morality, the Strand was lined with child prostitutes.”
Bragg shared another thought: “Meanwhile sexual titillation is becoming torrential … [At hen-nights] repro-Chippendales sweat down to their last spangled jock-strap …”
Bragg suggested that “Richard Branson could turn [each brothel] into an opulent centre for ‘healthy satisfaction’”. However, Bragg cautioned: “there will always be a minority on both sides of the transaction that wants the sleaze”.
Rounding out his argument, Bragg wrote: “You simply cannot force everyone into the same-shaped box … But who will be the brave Horatio in the House of Commons and move the Bill … I nominate Edwina Currie. Her private life is unimpeachable.”
He paid tribute to Currie’s “sexual explicitness”.
JIMMY SAVILE, DUNCROFT, ‘MIND’ MENTAL HEALTH CHARITY, STEPHEN FRY, WILFRED DE’ATH
In 2012, the ‘Independent’ had reminded its readers that former BBC producer Wilfred De’Ath “was recently arrested and charged with molesting a 14-year-old girl”.
The article carried a quote by columnist Ann Leslie, who said: “One of the things about Wilf was his shamelessness. I met him recently at an Oldie lunch with Melvyn Bragg …”
In 2014, an anonymous contributor to a blog wrote: “Stephen Fry is the president of the mental health charity ‘Mind’. He took over from Melvyn Bragg a few years ago. Coincidentally, Mind was running the Duncroft Girl’s School at the time that Jimmy Savile was abusing pupils there.”
A new Netflix documentary about Jimmy Savile reportedly “features archive footage of Savile being interviewed by the likes of [alleged paedophile] Russell Harty … and Melvyn Bragg”.
