I can say from personal experience that you can be incredibly unhappy as a child but present an equable face to society, because you know that the only effect of being honest is further stigmatism, which may occur within families.
I have zero knowledge as to this family, this child, I'm merely saying that parents claiming that a child is happy is not incontrovertible evidence that they were.
They may be right, they may be wrong. They may be unknowingly wrong, they could even be knowingly wrong. That's what an investigation has to uncover...
