On 13 August 2019, BBC child star Parys Lapper died, aged 19, in the Wolsey Hotel in Worthing, near Brighton, England.

It is estimated his body lay undiscovered in the hotel room for three days.

Parys featured on the BBC series Child of Our Time, which followed millennium babies from their birth through to adulthood.

Parys's mother Alison, born without arms and with shortened legs, became famous when she posed while eight months pregnant with him for a Trafalgar Square sculpture.

It is not known who Parys's father is.

Parys's mother, Alison Lapper, 54, told The Telegraph that, by the age of 14 or 15, "dodgy" people started knocking on the front door asking her for money.

Parys would say: "Mum, if you don’t pay these people, they are going to beat me up."

Around the age of 11 or 12 Parys learned that his half-sister had taken her own life aged 22, his surrogate 'granny' died from cancer, and a live-in support worker made an allegation that Alison Lapper was sexually abusing her son.

At the age of 16, Parys Lapper was put into care.

When Parys was aged 17, Alison decided to have Parys sectioned.

He was placed for a while in an anorexia unit 'despite never having the eating disorder'.

In Sevenoaks, the psychiatrist said there wasn't anything wrong with him.

Parys was discharged from mental health services on July 25, 2019, and went to live in a temporary accommodation hotel in Worthing, West Sussex.

At one point, before his death, Parys had moved in with a man called Terry.

According to Alison, Terry had been allowing Parys to stay in his Brighton home ‘in return for sexual favours and drugs’.

Alison and Parys had been on a day trip to Brighton shortly before Parys died and Alison has said “he was back to my laughing, very funny Parys”.



In his 19 years Parys has been knocked over by a car, held a gunpoint and beaten up after a robbery.

'Parys was able to access addictive stimulants such as Diazepam by separately visiting an NHS psychiatrist, private psychiatrist, GP surgeries and A&E.

'At 17, Parys was diagnosed with a number of psychological conditions.

'He relied on his mother Alison to shop, clean and cook for him and used drugs and alcohol ‘to the extreme’'.

"Alison Lapper had spent a wonderful day in Brighton with her son shortly before he was found dead on August 13 2019 in a hotel room in Worthing."

Describing the moment Alison found that Parys had died, Alison said: "I was actually in the bathroom at the time and someone came through and said 'the police are here'.

They said he was found dead.

Alison said: "We spoke on the phone. How could this have happened?"

"There were no warning signs. Nothing."



When Parys was aged 17, Alison decided to have Parys sectioned.

In Sevenoaks, the psychiatrist said there wasn't anything wrong with him.

At the age of 17, Parys lapper was 'sectioned' .

Following his sectioning, he was treated in Sevenoaks, Kent.

Alison Lapper says: "He got sectioned at 17. He got sent to an anorexic unit.

"What good is that to somebody that isn't anorexic? Those weren't his problems.

"And he got thrown out of there because the psychiatrist said there wasn't anything wrong with him and that care in the community is what he needed."

She said from that day on, Parys got "pushed and moved from pillar to post."

There have been a number of men in the life of Alison Lapper, the mother of Parys Lapper, the teenager who died mysteriously, on 13 August 2019.

Alison met Francis, a hospital porter, who was helping a disabled person at a Mouth and Foot Painters Association conference.

'Francis was seen somewhat as the black sheep of the family and a bit of a loner.'

Eventually Francis decided to move to London and stay with Alison in her flat.

After two years, Francis proposed and they got married.

Alison was involved in an incident with Francis. Alison bit Francis on the shoulder.

Alison wrote: "I was always scared of him after that and I couldn't love someone I was scared of. I knew the only way to move forward would be to file for divorce."

Alison had been pregnant in her 20s, and had miscarried four times.

She became pregnant again in April 1999.

Her boyfriend 'was not the love of her life'.

According to Alison: 

"He was already a divorcee and a long-distance father to his other children.

"He wanted her to terminate the pregnancy."

But Alison did not terminate the pregnancy and Parys was born.

The boyfriend departed.
