In May 2020, Elaine Murray was verbally abused after warning a family of the alleged coronavirus risk in a play park.

Elaine Murray, aka Elaine Leaver, is the leader of the Dumfries and Galloway Council, in Scotland.

She is married to Jeff Leaver, the education chairman on Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Dumfries - Neglected by the politicians?

In May 2019, Jeff Leaver was furious at a comment attributed to Dumfries businessman Niall Cowan on the Facebook forum The Echo.

The comment asked if Jeff Leaver had benefited financially from a council development known as The Bridge.



The coronavirus incident happened at a play park where signs have been placed on lamp posts stating that the park is closed.

Elaine Murray said: 'I had told a couple of girls playing there before that it was a danger to their health and safety and they went off.

'But this was a shock and we were quite intimidated by the man who came up to us in a threatening manner, so we reported it to the police.

'These people knew it was out of bounds because it could not be disinfected by the council.

'It would have to be sprayed continually to cope with the spread of Covid-19 through surface contact.'

'When I told the woman sitting on one of the swings in the park and the man who was between the slide and the swings that the park was closed on hygiene grounds she said she didn’t care.

'And when I told her the police could move them on again she said she didn’t care.'

Over the years there has been much poverty in Dumfries.

Elaine Murray and her husband moved away and she took a photo from a distance to keep as evidence of the offence.

But that sparked fury from the couple who shouted and swore at them.

Then later on when Dr Murray and her husband passed the park again to return home the woman threatened to take their photograph and put it on a Facebook page claiming they were “paedophiles” and “beasts”.

Dumfries and Galloway council estimates that extra services during the alleged coronavirus pandemic will exceed £1 million.

The cost for face masks, other personal protective equipment and additional sanitisers over the period to the end of June 2020 is currently estimated at £600,000.
