Hotel Portmeirion Village on the Snowdonia coast of northern Wales, at Penrhyndeudraeth, Gwynedd County
Created in the 1920s, the village is a wonderfully aesthetic and playful creation of eccentric and much-appreciated Welsh architect, Sir Bertram Clough Williams-Ellis (1883-1978)
It is a one-of-a-kind place of colourful, rather Italianate cheerful architecture, set out and juxtaposed for delight and art rather than business, charming nearly everyone who visits there
Many will recognise Portmeirion as 'The Village' of the late 1960s TV series 'The Prisoner' starring Patrick McGoohan ... whose 17 episodes dealt with issues such as government mind-control and the sham of elections and democracy, in a place where people had numbers and not names, and did not know who ruled over them ... still relevant today
Here is a good picture capturing the charm of Portmeirion ... Prisoner fans will recognise the 'Green Dome', under which the oft-changing 'No 2' held sway over the Village's denizens
