3 UK By-Elections - 20 July 2023

  1. 'Labour’s Danny Beales was on 41 per cent in Uxbridge and South Ruislip and Conservative Steve Tuckwell 33 per cent, according to a survey by JL Partners.'

Labour was ahead in Boris Johnson's old Uxbridge seat

Were there any exit polls?

Was the vote rigged?

  1. Labour has won the Selby and Ainsty by-election, overturning a majority of 20,137 votes - the biggest it has ever overcome at a by-election.

  2. Keir Mather becomes the youngest MP currently in the House of Commons, at 25 years old.

  1. The Liberal Democrats have won the Somerton and Frome by-election by more than 11,000 votes.

  2. Party leader Sir Ed Davey said the party was "firmly back" in the West Country after Sarah Dyke overturned a Conservative majority of 19,000 votes.

  3. The Conservatives narrowly held off Labour in Boris Johnson's former Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency by 495 votes after a recount.

  4. Labour had hoped to win the seat but blamed the loss on the expansion of the Ultra Low Emissions Zone in the capital under London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

(Uxbridge former MP Boris set up the original ULEZ zone.)

  1. The by-elections were triggered by the resignations of all three sitting Conservative MPs

At the last general election, the Conservatives won the constituency of Selby and Ainsty in northern England with a majority of 20,137.

In Somerton and Frome in southwest England, the opposition Liberal Democrats overturnd a Conservative majority of 19,213.

In Johnson's former seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip on the western fringes of London, Labour was seeking to overturn a Conservative majority of 7,210.

  1. Looks like a kick in the nuts to the Conservatives being delivered, not a positive vote for anyone else. Where Sadiq Khan was being a deeply unpopular London Mayor, they voted against him, not against the Tories.

These by-elections show that no-one particularly likes anyone, but they do absolute hate politicians.
