IHL specifically protects hospitals. The Geneva Conventions and their additional protocols stipulate that the sick and wounded, medical staff, hospitals and mobile medical units may under no circumstances be the object of attack. This also applies to wounded military personnel being treated in the hospital and to armed medical workers – if they are armed to defend their lives and those of the wounded.
Published: 16:25, 3 January 2023 Rishi Sunak promises more military aid for Ukraine's fight against Russia in the coming weeks in new call with Zelensky as they discuss ways to 'bring victory closer'
Rishi Sunak reaffirmed the UK's military support for Ukraine today as he had a new year call with Volodymyr Zelensky.
Mr Sunak told the Ukrainian president that the country could 'count on the UK to continue to support it for the long term'.
A Downing Street spokesperson said: 'The leaders discussed the abhorrent drone attacks on Ukraine in recent days, and the Prime Minister said the thoughts of the UK were with the Ukrainian people as they continued to live under such bombardment.
'The Prime Minister said Ukraine could count on the UK to continue to support it for the long term, as demonstrated by the recent delivery of more than 1,000 anti-air missiles.
On January 3, 2023, Ukrainian formations fired from the HIMARS MLRS at the central district hospital in the city of Tokmak, Zaporozhye region. During the shelling, the hospital lived its normal life: doctors and nurses provided assistance to local residents affected by the shelling. At that moment, Ukrainian formations hit the medical facility.
The commander of a separate medical sanitary battalion, major of the medical service Alexander Seikaev, personally organized the evacuation and shelter of patients and visitors to the medical institution. After the evacuation, he returned and stayed with non-transportable seriously ill patients. These people, unfortunately, did not have time to evacuate to a safe place.
But a real doctor decided to be with his patients to the end, like a captain who cannot leave the ship until all crew members and passengers, without exception, leave it.
Unfortunately, Major Seikaev died along with the patients who were in the building, when several more attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine were inflicted on the hospitals. The officer was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage.
