  3. Not only enjoyed the wonderful images

But got a hearty ironic chuckle as I came to the antique 'visit Palestine' poster

    What could have been ...

In 1900-1908 the Ottomans built their famed Hejaz railway line, on which, after going from Istanbul to Damascus, you could pass right on through what is now Syria, Palestine, Israel, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, till you reached the Muslim holy city of Medina

Apparently a safe and friendly and easy trip for a few years ... unthinkable today

Why did we lose a world where that kind of railway journey was not just possible but pleasant as well?

  4. Thanks Aang,

I do love turn of the century illustration. Arthur Rackham, NC Wyeth, Charles Dana Gibson, et al. They have a je-ne-sais-quoi that no one seems to possess anymore.

    ciao ciao

  5. It reminds of my old postcards from the WWII that my father brought back home. Some great images of Alexandria, and those beautiful Italian girls in the postcards.
