BELMOND RAILWAYS - DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY

Reopening a Dumfries to Stranraer railway is one of a string of options still on the table for the future of transport in south west Scotland.

Draft proposals have been published and are now out for consultation.

South West Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway, would be an ideal area for luxury rail travel of the sort provided by the Belmond Royal Scotsman elsewhere in Scotland.

Think about a Belmond rail journey with:

Live ceilidhs,
A visit to a distillery,
An observation car,
Visits to castles and gardens,
An on-board spa,
Fresh Scottish cuisine
And outdoor pursuits.

Dumfries and Galloway's Lost Railways

Currently, there is a rail link between Glasgow and Stranraer.

Currently there is a rail link between Glasgow and Dumfries.

Currently there is a rail link between London and Dumfries (via Carlisle).

It has been suggested that the rail link between Dumfries and Stranraer should be restored.

Until more rail links are restored, Belmond could use luxury coaches for trips to such places as:

Drumlanrig Palace,
Logan Botanic Garden,
The Garden of Cosmic Speculation,
The Peter Pan linked Moat Brae house,

Drumlanrig palace, in Dumfries and Galloway.

AND Broughton House and Garden,
Robert Burns house,
And the Cairnholy neolithic tombs.

...

In John Buchan's Thirty Nine Steps, Richard Hannay headed by rail from London to Newton Stewart in Dumfries and Galloway.

John Buchan loved Dumfries and Galloway.

The reopening of the Dumfries- Stranraer railway would allow a company such as Belmond to provide luxury train travel, and luxury hotels, to wealthy tourists from around the world.

  5. Dumfries and Galloway has some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain. I live near the border but often travel through the area. I love pointing out little things like the fact that the Devorgilla bridge has one Gothic arch on it's Western most side, the rest being semicircular. Most of the bridge was washed away by a flood in the 1600's, and they rebuit with semicircular arches. It also used to come fas more towards the town centre but when they walled off the river edge on the Sands, they shortened it and added steps. Love it, and love this site.
