ReplyDeleteI'm somewhat surprised that no one has stated what I think is obvious. The Israeli policy is clearly not shoot-to-kill. Every media outlet focuses on the death toll without considering those not killed and what that means.
ReplyDeleteWhich is to say: with thousands being shot and yet only a hundred-and-something being killed the Israelis are only 'succeeding' in killing 5% or so. Do we really think Israelis are such terrible shots?
I'd say they'd be pretty good shots, so good in fact that they'd score a kill 90-95% of the time. If they wanted to.
But perhaps they don't want to? Considered thus it would be sensible to assume that a 5% casualty figure is what you might expect when the purpose of the exercise is to not kill someone but maim them instead.
I think what we have here is a redux of Israel's erstwhile policy of breaking limbs. Remember that footage of Israeli soldiers holding down children and smashing their arms with big rocks? Okay, it's like that only more permanent and with less incriminating footage.
I suspect that the Israelis are laughing at our obsession with the one hundred or so they've killed knowing full well that these constitute the 'misses'. The 'hits' on the other hand are twenty times as great and almost entirely unremarked upon.
Meanwhile back in the sniper's nest the sharpshooters will be running daily comps to see who blows the most limbs off with points deducted for anyone unfortunate to score a kill.
Me, I say kudos to everyone involved. Honestly, not even the nazis thought of this one. Israel - outdoing the nazis!
