Shakespeare's character 'Bottom' is a weaver.
Bottom's head is changed, by Puck, into that of an "ass" (a donkey).
Bottom is not aware that he has the head of an ass.
Titania has been drugged with Oberon's love juice and falls in love with Bottom.
According to Shakespeare, lust is a form of blindness and madness.

Fleshly charm does not last and is in a sense unreal.
In other words, you don't need a girl/boyfriend; and thegirl/boyfriend's sexiness is a bit of an illusion.
However, according to the Buddhists, avoiding sex, while continuing to think foul thoughts, is not good.
Better to obtain physical outlet, while thinking wholesome thoughts.
The paradox is that you will be happier if you are not 'in love'.
Some Indonesians look happy?
Voltaire, like Buddha, could see that there is suffering in this world.
"Imagine the situation of a Pope's daughter aged fifteen, who in three months had undergone poverty and slavery, had been raped nearly every day, had seen her mother cut into four pieces, had undergone hunger and war, and was now dying of the plague in Algiers." (Voltaire, Candide, Chapter 12)
"Do you believe," said Candide, "that men have always massacred each other as they do to-day, that they have always been liars, cheats, traitors, ingrates, brigands, idiots, thieves, scoundrels, gluttons, drunkards, misers, envious, ambitious, bloody-minded, calumniators, debauchees, fanatics, hypocrites, and fools?"
"Do you believe," said Martin, "that hawks have always eaten pigeons when they have found them?"
Voltaire appears to be pessimistic about human nature; he might suggest that there will always be spooks and generals carrying out atrocities.
Indonesia was Buddhist for longer than it has been Moslem.
But, if hawks may not be capable of fast change, what about humans?
Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung (1875-1961) said in Memories, Dreams, Reflections:
"Natural history tells us of a haphazard and casual transformation of species over hundreds of millions of years of devouring and being devoured...
"But the history of the mind offers a different picture.
"Here the miracle of reflecting consciousness intervenes."
Physicist David Bohm believes that life and consciousness are present in varying degrees in all matter, including supposedly inanimate matter such as electrons or plasmas.
He suggests that evolutionary developments do not emerge in a random fashion.
Happiness is about forgetting your own happiness and being part of a happy team?
Standford neurophysiologist Karl Pribram believes in the holographic nature of reality.
Every part of a hologram contains all the information possessed by the whole.
In a holographic universe there are no limits to the extent to which we can alter reality.
What we see as reality is a canvas where we can draw any picture we want.
Some people manage to be happy in spite of poverty.
The Buddhists believe that what we are thinking now, is what we will become.
Research has suggested that Buddhists are able to get their brains to feel happiness.
According to Owen Flanagan, professor of philosophy at Duke University in North Carolina, Buddhists appear to be able to stimulate a part of their brain which produces positive emotions and a feeling of well being.
Writing in New Scientist, Professor Flanagan referred to findings of a study by Richard Davidson, of the University of Wisconsin, who used scanners to analyse regions of a Buddhist's brain.
Parts of Buddhists brains, linked to happiness, appear to "light up" consistently.
"The most reasonable hypothesis is there is something about conscientious Buddhist practice that results in the kind of happiness we all seek," Davidson writes.

Christmas Humphreys, 1901-83, formerly a judge in London, listed the Twelve Principles of Buddhism.
(Twelve Principles of Buddhism By Christmas Humphreys)
1. Learn how to save yourself by using direct and personal experience.
2. There is continual change, a continual cycle involving birth and death.
Consciousness is continuous.
It is forever looking for new kinds of self-expression.
Life is a continous flow.
If you know there is a tsunami coming, don't stay on the beach guarding your possessions.
If you cling on to things, you will suffer, because you are resisting the flow.
3. There is only one 'ultimate reality'.
It does not change.
It is beyond our understanding.
We are all linked to it.
We are all part of the one team.
4. What we are now is the result of our past thoughts.
We are the creator of our circumstances.
By right thought and right action we can gradually purify ourselves and eventually reach enlightenment and Nirvana and beyond.
5. We are happiest as a happy team.
We are all inter-linked and should feel compassion for everything from trees to Thais and from jaguars to Jews.
Compassion is the "Law of laws".
6. Imagine we have an urge to win at golf by cheating.
Imagine we have an urge to be the hero of the football match, by monopolising the ball.
Suffering is caused by such wrong urges.
7. To end suffering, we should have
(1)Right Views,
(2) Right Aims or Motives,
(3) Right Speech,
(4) Right Acts,
(5) Right Livelihood,
(6) Right Effort,
(7) Right Concentration or mind-development,
(8) "Cease to do evil, learn to do good, cleanse your own heart: this is the Teaching of the Buddhas".
8. Nirvana, the extinction of the limitations of selfhood, is attainable on earth.
"Look within; thou art Buddha".
9. Follow the path between the opposites, avoiding all extremes.
10. Meditation helps us to refrain from mental and emotional attachment to "the passing show".
11. The Buddha said: "Work out your own salvation" using your intuition.
Each man suffers the consequences of his own acts, and learns thereby, while helping his fellow man to the same deliverance.
12. Buddhism does not deny the existence of God or soul, though it places its own meaning on these terms. Buddhism has no dogmas, and points to man alone as the creator of his present life and sole designer of his destiny.

ReplyDeleteThere is a lot of misconception concerning Buddhism and the science of yoga. Physical attraction is from the lower chakra, however it must be transmuted to the crown chakra. This is still accomplished through tantra.
ReplyDeleteWhat many fail to understand is the process calls for non attachment even during sex, abstinence or orgasm for Shive (the male) with Shakti the female. When is described as plunging into the cosmic ocean with no attachment, it means tantra for the sake of enlightenment, not falling in love or focusing simply on one single partner.
Some mistakenly interpret this as the renunciation of all sexual activity, meditating and chanting. This is far from the truth.
I saw an examply of this just this morning with coffee in the comments concerning the dried river bed in India filled with hundreds of Shive/Shakti carvings in the stone rocks at the bottom.
True to form a “westerner” comes up with this.
“India is know for it’s vast pagan culture of worshiping false gods. Guess that is why as a nation, they have not been blessed.”
He caught this response.
“Yes cause yur religion is the ultimate one right? Get over yourselves. There are alot of religions in the world and there is no more proof yours is the right one then there is with any other religion. A book written by man is not proof sorry chappy. ”
The ignorance and brain washing that pervades this planet never ceases to amaze me. The two highest forms of energy in the universe, positive and negative, Shiva and Shakti is somehow a pagan false God and reading Constantine which is nothing but a book is the utlimate goal and will bless you nation! You can’t get much more confused than this.
Positive and negative energy combine in the air to produce lighting, the two highest forms of energy in the universe are somehow pagan? Yes lets just turn our backs and nature and the natural world and read books. That is the ticket.

ReplyDeleteIt would be interesting to know Shakespeare's definition of lust. It is hard to actually know what he was getting out without it. Is the attraction of a magnet to a nail lust?
ReplyDeleteThe theory of non-attachment goes back 11000 years in India.
For instance a married man who decides later in life to try and raise kundalini will ask for his wife's permission to engage with dakinis. It is usually given. It is for his benefit and the wife's benefit. That is real non-attachment.
Here in the west people prefer to watch cheesy movies, ignore massive child abduction rings. Yes they are attempting to connect with that Shakti/Shiva energy in their own sick perverted ways. Their idea of connecting with the creative forces is to read books (the bible) and sing hallelujah.
It is symbol of a society long ago taken over by simplistic and evil forces. In fact here in the west we kill those of the nature religions whether they be the ancient Celts, or the American indians etc. They are called savages and pagans, and everybody but them is going to hell. The basic doctrine is trillions of people tasted the fire before Constantine wrote his book and billions afterward because they did not let the Christos into their heart. Of course the Christos has always been in every heart if it is still beating and the cells are still dividing. The Christos is the energy of creation.
Indians are all spiritual seekers, Westerners are all cheesy movie-goers ?! I spare you 30 blows.
DeleteShame the buddhists fail to apply their twelve principles and co-exist 'happily' with minorities in Myanmar and Sri Lanka. Instead they oppress them and commit atrocities against them.
ReplyDeleteTrue however about the agenda of promoting lust and illicit relationships in the film industry. Its all about normalizing such behaviour. To follow your desires, 'do what you want to do', without any care of the consequences and lose all form of self-control.
"That it is highly possible if not yet incontrovertible that he may have been an ‘Illuminati Grand Wizard’ would have not even entered the frame of reference in the minds of millions of children who grew up watching Top of the Pops, Jim’ll Fix It and other shows on television and radio. Yes, many people sensed the creepiness and the paedophilia accusations date back to the Fifties but what if child abuse was merely the calling card of something even more sinister?"

Bonobos apes are a cheery bunch, while their close relatives,Gorilla's are often morose and generally pissed off.
ReplyDeleteChimpanzee's on the other hand are a bit of both....more balanced. This can be accounted for by the chimps main diet which consists of bananas and lots of them.
Should we all mimic chimps and eat a lot if bananas?....like Michelle Obama for example.Putting up with a liar for a husband must be difficult, but Michelle pulls it off with aplomb.
No wonder Michelle is often depicted chomping away on a banana.....its all to do with holographic reality...and stuff disconnected with it etc.
Many thanks and blessings to you Aangirfan. xx
ReplyDeleteSurely Rolf's Life Model could not have been other than Rebecca Brookes. She's known to have been close to some complete asses.
ReplyDelete(And there's always the symbology of Isis and The Golden Ass).

I put this out under another post but I realised it was really meant for here:
ReplyDeleteI have a book written by a western Buddhist practitioner where he says that mindfulness and Nirvana are better than sex. I believe him. When we are in bliss we feel loveable, and then we feel attractive. When feel loveable and attractive we live in bliss. Not many people feel like that all that often.
The libertarians say that everything we do is for selfish reasons. This is Any Rand philosophy. If we save a starving child we only do it only because it brings us pleasure, they say, and in this way we are acting entirely selfishly. But only selfish people who have always had all would say this.
I sometimes argue with the libertarians online, and I tell them that they have it the wrong way round. I couldn’t start my car the other day because of a flat battery, but a West Indian man told me what to do as he pushed my car. He pushed really hard and I did as he said and I managed to start the car. As I drove down the road I gave him a wave and he waved back. It was a great feeling, sort of like Bliss, I guess. I really liked him.
Years ago there was no money, but Adam Smith said that primitive people battered to exchange goods trying to get the best deal for themselves. But early mankind never bartered - Adam Smith got it wrong and never did any field research to back his theories – people would just give stuff away. If you were good at making shoes and had some spare pairs and your friend needed some shoes you would just give him a pair. And if the next day he needed some help in his field you would just help him for as long as was needed and it would never occur to you say that he owed you so many hours afterwards. You would just enjoy helping your friend. It has been shown that primitive people who live in small tribes never get depression. Depression is a state of self-hatred. Read ‘Debt: The First 5, 000 Years’, by David Graber.
So, if you lived in a small village and your house got blown down then everyone in the village would club together and help you to build you a new one. And they would all really enjoy themselves having a great time while that were at it too.
It is true in a way that everything we do we only do for our own pleasure, but it truly gives us pleasure to selflessly help someone. And when we feel accepted and loved this gives joy. Feeling loveable is extremely important to humans.
The libertarians would say that because we feel joy when we help someone then that’s the only reason why we do it, but the joy comes from the selfless act, not the selfish act. It’s hard to explain, is it a vase or is it a face? The two combine are one. But the libertarian view is cold and calculating because these people have very little empathy and are not as happy as people who are more warm hearted and generous. We are community based creatures, rather than individually based ones.
Nirvana is where we are truly at peace with ourselves, where we like ourselves, our friends, our communities, our world and universe. The evil people who run our world are full of hatred, and they think that the only way out of their misery is to require more possessions, power, and domination. They are selfish Ayn Rand-ians, but Any Rand was drug addict and a pervert, which is not a very happy place to be. And she suffered from chronic depression towards the end of her life. Her philosophy did not bring her peace, joy, or happiness.
I have a book written by a western Buddhist practitioner where he says "that mindfulness and Nirvana are better than sex. I believe him."
DeleteStop the cameras. Chances are if it was written by a westener it is new age bullshit.
"Nirvana is where we are truly at peace with ourselves, where we like ourselves, our friends, our communities, our world and universe. "
No it is not. Nirvana is about releasing the sexual energy through the crown chakra and unleashing the power of the universe. Very few have ever done this. It gives one access to the akashic record. Lightning bolts can be thrown by the finger tips ... ala Thor and other masters.

This is the usual strawman nonsense you produce when considering libertarians. I say nothing of the sort.
> I sometimes argue with the libertarians online,
and sometimes block their posts. Though that is usually when the right to bear arms is being discussed.

Nope, I wouldn't say that.

Maybe I have it ?
DeleteYou and/or the folk you debate with see libertarianism as a spiritual life path of some sort ? With Ayn Rand its gospel writer.
Whereas it is normally considered a political position.
Rolf is Diary of a Teenage Girl in the flesh. Skating around the borders of criminality but unlikely to protest if the state revoked the penalty to allow... ‘diary of a child’. The vulnerable suffering increased - for the sake of sensation. Philosophical roots that drive those who have a lower, or no belief, in the value of individual people, compassion - those sufficiently given over to the sex-god that demands no other allegiance. We believe: we do.
ReplyDeleteSexually flawed but resistant others, stop this, through aggressive exposure and appeals to the higher, noble, civil and enlightened. Not convoluting appropriate same-sex loving or, to a degree, same-age experimentation. Promotion of the last two is naively said to be equal opps. No, the young listen on their handhelds, so contemporary equality requires those this vulnerable to age-based manipulation, should be given extra positive support to make informed choices. Clap-trap they need encouragement is that bitter and fascist side of feminism and queer politics. Bullying and discrimination re sexuality can be met within confines that respects collective diversity and the consensus that sexual activity is fraught with dangers and more likely regretful in teenage years. The screen sheen betrays the testimony of the majority that it, ‘just ain’t like them romantic movies’. We must oppose the Illuminati’s pop-puppets and advocate that genuinely-consenting over-16 year old sex is the beginning of tolerance, an orange, not necessarily green, light. Vigilant citizen(s) dot com.
Excuse m’ranty, pompy, wordy, sound-off but that’s me, on the - obvious to most of y’all, I know - ‘hidden agenda’.
On the Buddhist response or Jung’s musings? Neither completely Christian or not. Buddhists - and I would expect Taoists - have much to teach. Around 2000, for a year or so, the Tibetan lot were my closest friends. Maintained my take, freely sharing and occasionally joining their gatherings. Always said they undoubtedly brought light, particularly in approaches to - for me - God, and were open and generous over differences.
Thomas Merton, the contemplative I read most, towards the end of his life said, he wanted ‘to become as good a Buddhist as I can’. That speaks.
Also digging around, found this:

This post does not about Buddhism per se, because there are different strands of Buddhism. Many people concentrate on Tibet, because everyone has heard of Tibetan Buddhism and the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Mysterious, or what? But Tibetan Buddhism is associated with genocide where they wiped out most of the local tribal religions.
ReplyDeleteLike the Crusades, Tibetan Buddhist were knights and warriors and were probably not very Buddhist at all - like the Crusaders never turned the other cheek, or forgave their enemies. Hacking and butchery was commonplace.
But in Tibet the Buddhist monks kept the hierarchy in place and the Dalai Lama sat at the top of the Tibetan aristocracy where he lives in luxury. And he keeps the order with an iron hand where ordinary Tibetans are used as serfs, or virtually slaves. When the Chinese came in and gave ordinary people some land they were seen as liberators.
Nothing is black and white in our world.

ReplyDeleteI'm a liberal but I don't think porn is all that good, but I wouldn't ban it. I've watched it and it blew my brains out so I stopped watching it as I knew it would be addictive.
A life that is clean and without vice is a happier life. I think that most people who take drugs and go to orgies are probably miserable and unhappy deep down. This is not to say that my sex life with my girlfriend is not hot, though, or near pornographic, but its kept in its place, reserved for special moments. We could also over indulge in food and alcohol and become unhappy too.
Below is an extract from an article by a rock star who loves porn, but I bet he is not all that happy. Buddha was right about passion and desire, which can consume you, but I wouldn't take it all out of my life. Many of the old wise sages and ancients said that moderation was the key, then we will not only live a happier life, but a healthy passionate one too.
"Musician John Mayer had said in a Playboy interview, “When I watch porn, if it’s not hot enough, I’ll make up back stories in my mind, this is my problem now: Rather than meet somebody new, I would rather go home and replay the amazing experiences I’ve already had.”
