ReplyDeleteInteresting that it's all coming out now, the decades of Dean Worship having finally run out. (The US two-disc DVD of "Rebel Without a Cause" was released some years ago to poor sales... Dean's a dead deity and money was lost finding it out.)
Only one curious aside, and I think Darwin Porter covered it in the book he wrote about Vidal callled "Pink Triangle".
Seems that Vidal met Dean very early on in Hollywood, and hated him on first sight. By this time, Vidal had written his anti-CIA novel DARK GREEN, BRIGHT RED which got him on the American State Department's shit list. Did he recognize Dean for what he was?
No doubt Gore Vidal was a bit of a loose cannon himself, but consider another thing: Right after WWII, Vidal's early novel WILLIWAW was selling well and the young Gore was on the lookout for another bestseller. Deciding on a fiction about an "Aliester Crowley-like" fellow, Gore's early excursions to Italy were to discover what Crowley had been up to there, years before.
We'll probably never know what Vidal dug up on Crowley. But we DO know he hated spooks, and they hated him, forever after. He killed the book he wrote about Crowley, fiction though it was, and never referred to it again.
Did Vidal know what Dean, like Crowley before him, probably really was? Did Vidal want to live a long life and know keeping silent is the best way to do that? Mayhaps.
A co-worker from years back told me that he started researching for a thesis about some aspect of these people... I even hesitate to say the name. He hadn't even spoken of it with anyone when a strange man accosted him on the street and whispered that he had better change his project if he knew what was good for him. He said it scared the living bejeezus out of him and he wasted no time in changing it.
DeleteNo doubt something similar happened with Vidal.
Thanks for the details. Another reference that really shows the military-CIA connection to the "hippie" revolution is "Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon" by David McGowan. All the big names are connected.
ReplyDeleteSo the 1967 or so Brando movie, "Reflections in a Golden Eye" where he plays a repressed homosexual is more fact than fiction?
