Texas has low taxes; and provides few services for mothers, children and families.

Vermont is a high-tax, high-service state.

Children from Texas are twice as likely to drop out of high school as children from Vermont.

Children from Texas are four times more likely to be sent to jail, and nearly twice as likely to die from abuse and neglect.

Over the past ten years more than 20,000 American children have been killed in their own homes by family members.

That is nearly four times the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

America has the worst record of child abuse in the industrialized world.

Twenty-seven children under the age of 15 die from physical abuse or neglect every week in America.

According to UNICEF, the United States has 2.4 annual deaths per 100,000 children, compared to 1.4 for France; 1 in Japan, and 0.9 in the United Kingdom.

In 1993, an estimated 743,200 American children suffered physical, sexual or emotional abuse.

"Nearly half of Americans (46.4%) reported meeting criteria at some point in their life for either a serious anxiety disorder (28.8%), mood disorder (20.8%), impulse-control disorder (24.8%) or substance use disorders (14.6%).
